The middle school years are tough because kids are being introduced to a ton of academic concepts that are much more complicated than what they learned in elementary school. Simultaneously, they are experiencing social and emotional growth and beginning to find their first steps of independence. Although having a couple of weeks off in December is a great thing, it means students will have to adjust to going back to school to complete the second half of the academic year. The adjustment can be smooth or difficult, and there are a few things that make the situation easier for both student and parent our private Orange County middle school tutors are here to help. 1.   Get caught up on reading One of the things that most middle schoolers complain about is the amount of reading they need to complete their classroom assignments. Many kids are sent home with novels to read and textbooks to skim through but are otherwise caught up in various family and holiday activities. If kids have something due within the first week or two of going back to school, its important that they have an opportunity to get caught up on their reading. Many students at this stage of their education need a little bit more time to work on reading comprehension and understand whats going on with different characters and plot points. Perhaps they just have too many activities in their schedule, or maybe they need to focus more on one concept and less on others. This is a great opportunity for students to start learning about work-life balance, so they have the concept down once they start high school. 4. A healthy daily routine Its also a good idea to reintroduce the importance of a healthy daily routine over the winter break. Once the holiday feasting is over students should have the opportunity to eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables and go to bed with enough time to get a full night’s sleep. Many students stop exercising in the winter when it gets colder but moderate exercise is essential to physical health and mental balance. 5. Allow time for independence Many middle school students feel a little bit overwhelmed with the amount of time they spend with family over the winter break. Theyre still young, but theyre starting to feel like they want to make their decisions and do their own thing. If possible, its great for them to have a couple of hours each day where they get to choose what activity they want to do. Maybe they want to play outside or read their favorite book. The hiring fairs give teachers a unique opportunity to connect face to face with top international schools for a chance to interview for the most exciting teaching positions abroad. It’s worth bearing in mind that job fair spots are limited and demand is high so make sure you apply as soon as possible for a chance to attend. We had lots of questions from our audience at our recent Facebook Live QA about the job fairs. We’ve answered your most common questions below: When and where are the 2017 fairs happening? You can apply to attend one of two fairs: Bangkok: January 5th â€" 8th San Francisco: February 10th â€" 12th What are the requirements to apply to attend the fairs? Keep in mind, however, that there are six to eightreading passages throughout, so youll have even less than a minute for each question. It may help you to read the questions before reading the passage, so youll know what to focus on. For other students, this may be distracting or time-consuming, so try different methods on SAT II Literature practice tests beforehand, then use what works best for you on test day. 3. Skip and return to questions if needed If a question stumps you, it is best practice to skip and come back to it as needed. You dont want to waste precious time figuring out one hard question and miss out on the chance to answer several questions you do know. Later questions might even help jog your memory! Once you come back to questions you have skipped, try eliminating one or more choices. If you can make an educated guess, do so, but keep in mind that a wrong answer gets penalized a fraction of a point; otherwise, omit the question entirely, which neither earns nor deducts points from you. However, if you are taking the subject test starting in March of 2016, you should take an educated guess for each answer, as wrong answers will no longer be penalized. 4. Read poems especially carefully Of course, youll need to read each passage with an attentive eye. However, be especially careful with poetry; its language is often denser and can be more difficult to understand than prose. Because each word is generally weighted more in poems than in prose, think of the different meanings of the words, as well as how different connotations make up the overall tone of the poem. Consider keywords in the context of the poem not just what you know of its dictionary definition. Remember that one word can change or complicate a poems meaning and message. If youve done well in literature classes throughout most of your high school career, or have worked thoroughly with a literature tutor, it may be worth your time to demonstrate your mastery on the subject test. Be sure to study up on your literary terminology, since passages will come from a variety of genres, time periods, and cultural literary traditions. While youll need to come equipped with vocabulary, an understanding of literary concepts, and analysis skills, know that answers can be found by closely reading the text and do not require outside knowledge of specific texts. With careful preparation, confidence, and these test-day strategies, you can excel on the SAT Subject Test in Literature.
